Jony Ive announces the departure of The Apple and forms his own design company, In a surprise disclosure, Apple revealed today through a press release that legendary designer Jony Ive plans to leave the company later in the year. 

After that, Ive will open an independent design studio that will have Apple as one of its clients.

"While pursuing his personal projects," the press release reads in part. "I will continue in his new company to work closely and on a range of projects with Apple."

Of course, Ive played a key role in reviving Apple from the brink of bankruptcy in the late 1990s, thanks to a number of popular product designs such as Bondi Blue iMac, iPod and iPhone of course.

With Ive ready to leave, designers Evans Hankey and Alan Dae will take control of Apple's booming design group, reporting directly to Jeff Williams.

"Johnny is a unique figure in the world of design and his role in Apple's revival can not be overestimated, from the pioneering iMac in 1998 to the iPhone and the unprecedented ambition of Apple Park, where he put a lot of energy and care," said Tim Cook.

"Apple will continue to benefit from Jony's talent by working directly with him on exclusive projects, and through the continuous work of the team that has built up the passion and passion he has built." 

"After several years of working closely together, I am happy that our relationship continues to evolve and I look forward to working with Jony for a long time to come."

Commenting on his departure, Ive said he was proud of his contributions to The Apple and that the design team "will certainly thrive under the excellent leadership of Evans, Alan and Jeff, who were among my closest collaborators."

In a separate interview with the Financial Times, Yves said: "Although I will not be [Apple] employee, I will still be very involved - and I hope that for many years to come.This sounds like a natural and nice time to make this change."
