Ready or not, here comes the design of a new car: Aska, a multi-purpose vehicle designed for road driving and for air travel so you can look over the traffic barrier.

After working on the design for two years, the NTC, an emerging model of the Aska model, will be unveiled at an Israeli conference on Monday. We unveil the design here exclusively, along with the company's plan to test it in the first quarter of 2020 and start selling it in 2025.

Chief executive Mackie Kaplinsky said Japan's Aska, the Japanese bird, will be the size of a large SUV when it is on the road and will accommodate three passengers. Passengers will reach an open area close to the size of the few parking spaces, most likely a dedicated spot near a motorway or in a large car park. 

There, ASKA will extend its wings, take off vertically and fly independently for a typical range of up to 150 miles - no pilot is needed. After that it will descend to another open space and lead the last distance to its destination.



Building a flying car will not be easy. 
It has been almost 80 years since the books of automotive pioneer Henry Ford in 1940, "celebrated my words: a mixed plane and a working car." 

But unmanned aerial technology and navigation, coupled with increased urban congestion, began to change people's assumptions about what is possible.

"After decades of failed projects and wrong beginnings, a new class of vehicles has finally emerged that can [change] the way people and goods are transported in cities," Deloitte Consulting said in a report on Monday.

Sales will begin slowly as the US EVTOL market doubles from $ 3.4 billion in 2025 to $ 6.8 billion in 2035, according to Deloitte's forecast. But after lower costs, further social acceptance and advances in battery technology should lead to a five-year increase to $ 17.7 billion in 2040.

The best of both worlds - or the worst?
Hybrid designs such as NFT bridge two worlds that can be compromised by compromise. But NFT believes that the Aska range of cars will succeed through easy door-to-door transportation. 

If you have to take a Uber to the launch pad, greet a flying cab, then kick another Uber at the other end of the trip, you'll spend a lot of time waiting for the calls you might have paid for a boring car. An old car stuck on the ground.

"You are solving the problem of traffic, the problem of wasting time," said Maki Kaplinsky, who co-founded the company with her husband, chairman of NFT, Jay Kaplinsky. "We have the most efficient and convenient way to navigate in the future."

NFT, a shortcut to Next Future Transportation, expects Aska to cost about $ 200,000 to start, with prices falling to over $ 50,000. But most likely, people will only be paid for a subscription service or one-time trips, paying between $ 200 to $ 300 a month to cover normal car expenses such as payments, fuel, insurance and maintenance.

"We are not building anything for the rich," said Jay Kaplinsky. "We are building something that everyone can afford."

The Aska is approximately 20 feet long, with the wings folded across its back. When set to fly, it will have two wings length of about 40 feet.

No need to runway. Fans in the wings will be pushed through the body of the vehicle itself vertically. After take-off, rear fans will push forward so that the wings can generate an elevator and Aska can fly longer distances more efficiently than a UAV-like design.

Jay Kaplinsky said that using wings - not just rotors - brings other benefits. They left Aska sliding into the landing area in a calm spiral descent. This slip capability is also useful for emergency landing if there is a severe mechanical problem.

Its electric motors are powered by batteries that can be recharged with a conventional fuel engine to extend Aska's range. Maximum flight duration is 350 miles - but with one traveler.

NFT, headquartered in Mountain View, California, with engineering operations in Israel, operates an independent flight new technology, so all you have to do is choose a destination that is equivalent to Google Maps to get where you want to go. 

The company expects to partner with an automotive technology company to provide self-driving driving technology on the road.

Lots of obstacles
There are countless barriers beyond just geometry to make vision a reality: ensure the safety of passengers and anyone under the plane, get government certificates, manage an increasingly congested air space, and make new noise and convince city dwellers that they really want flying cars.

UAVs can help. 
The giant e-commerce giant Amazon unveiled the latest unmanned aircraft and won the Federal Aviation Administration's approval to operate as an airline. A competitor, Google Spinoff Project Wing, received FAA approval this year.

We have not yet reached the stage where drones drop boxes in your backyard, but these efforts promise to boost new technology for autonomous aircraft - and help regulators to deal with the best way to deal with them safely.

If successful NFT or other competitors, the cars will turn the aircraft life of residents of cities and suburbs. NFT believes that Aska will reduce travel time by up to half, and with a range of 150 miles, people may be willing to live away from city centers.

This assumes they are ready to drive further when the trip is not possible. If Aska is as affordable as the NFT hopes, it may bring a new form of air congestion. 

A quick look at the urban airspace can reveal hundreds of drones and taxis instead of a handful of planes.

The abundance of competition is a flying car

NFT is not alone. There's Kitty Hawk, funded by Larry Page, co-founder of Google and led by automotive pioneer Sebastian Thron. There is Ehang from China. 

There is Terrafugia, which hopes to sell its aircraft in 2019. There is AeroMobil in Slovakia, which hopes like the NFT to drive a hybrid vehicle.

Boeing and Airbus giants are very interested, for example with the Vahana Airbus project and the Audi partnership, making a taxi that competes with Boeing's first flight this year. Helicopter Bill introduced the Nexus concept as well.

A few of the aircraft cars that appeared at the CES technology show look like a mixture between unmanned aircraft and a small helicopter.

Then there Uber, which already runs Uber Copter now hopes to launch the UberAir service in 2023.

But NFT believes that the time is right for Aska, even if some competitors expect to be in the air soon. 

Kaplinskys expected new technological trends with its former companies, the first in the defense industry and the second Internet tools maker to sell things to GE Digital.

"This is our third company," said Guy Kaplinsky. "My goal is to predict the future."
