In the future, Apple Watch can have a domain-wide presentation, with Apple's newly released patent, indicating that Cupertino works on flexible screens and more. 

A patent was filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in September last year, in which the patent describes the design of a new display unit that can release the Apple Watch touch screen from the body of the wearable device and allow it to be extended to the belt.

The current Apple Watch clock uses an OLED panel, which Apple has built more than each of its smart clock sizes in its latest update in Series 4. 

It is also known that the company operates on MicroLED, a new display technology that has potential advantages in power factor and power consumption.

Now, exactly how the MicroLED Matrix was devised a smart clock design - or, in fact, other electronics - has been explored in the newly published patent application. 

Through the use of flexible links between an array of LEDs, Apple explains, this bendable substrate can be made a curve. 

How to do this depends on the final design of the device.

For example, in "Module View and System Applications" - monitored by FoldableNews - Apple first identifies a smart clock where the tape can be effectively changed to show different designs. 

We've seen the hours explore this possibility before, using FES from Sony using a flexible E Ink screen to allow players to customize the style. 

But this is only in monochrome, while the flexible MicroLED of Apple can show different colors and high resolution graphics.

The second possibility shown in the application is a more usable screen extension. 

This may convert the tape to a secondary screen, with touch support for the interactions. 

In short, the watchOS interface may not be limited to the square pad of the current OLED screen but extends to more free shapes around the wrist.

Of course, while using Apple Apple Watch to illustrate MicroLED developments, this does not mean that the technology will be limited to the wearable device. 

Flexible, rotatable monitors can be very useful in future iPhones, or in much larger formality, such as TVs. 

Currently, a few of the TV designs we've seen - such as the LG Signature OLED TV R unveiled at CES in January - have used OLED panels.
