The 24-year-old singer and model attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. When she was 13, her mother dreamed of winning the competition.

BANGKOK - Philippine writer Katrina Gra won the Miss Universe title in 2018 on Monday to beat contestants from 93 other countries and her mother is happy.

Gray wore a glittering red dress she said was inspired by a volcano in the Philippines after the crown was handed over to the crowd in Bangkok, which generally favored South East Asian contestants.

The singer and the 24-year-old model said she wore the red color because "when I was 13, she told me it was a dream to win Miss Universe in a red dress."

She said her mother cried when she saw some of them after winning the contest, Miss Universe Contest No. 67.

Gray won the first place respectively, Tamarin Green of South Africa, and third place Stephanie Gutierrez of Venezuela. Demi Lee Neil Peters of South Africa has succeeded.

"My heart is full of gratitude," Gray said. "There were moments of uncertainty as I felt tired and felt pressure."

Gray's father, Australian, was born and raised in Cairns, Australia. She studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Gray said during the competition that work in the poor neighborhood of Manila had taught her to find beauty in difficult situations.
"If you can teach people to be grateful, we can have an amazing world in which the negative can not grow and nurture, and the children will have a smile on their faces," she said.

The office of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterti was quick to congratulate the winner.

Gray is the fourth Filipino named Miss Universe.

"Ms. Gray really made the whole of the Philippines proud when he staggered on the world stage and offered the real qualities of Philippine identification of beauty: trust, grace, intelligence and strength in the face of difficult challenges," said a statement from the Presidential Palace.

"In its success, Miss Philippines has shown the world that women in our country have the ability to transform dreams into reality through passion, effort, determination and hard work."

The Miss Universe contest this year included the first contestant for transsexuals, Angela Pons of Spain. She said in a video presentation that it was not important for her to win but it was more important for her to "be here".

One of the few differences in this year's contest included Miss United States, Sarah Rose Summers, apparently to make fun of contestants from Cambodia and Vietnam on their English skills. I apologize for the summer.

The theme of the Miss of the Year contest was "Authorized Women" and was judged by seven women, including former contest winners, businesswomen and a fashion designer.

The Philippines previously won Miss Universe titles in 2015, 1973 and 1969.
